    Name MCALPINE, J. PHYLLIS GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
    Research Fields TEST biochemistry and medical genetics
    Categories Medical Health Sciences
    Citizenship No citizenship available
    Eligibility A personal bequest from Dr. Phyllis J. McAlpine, along with gifts from her friends and family and a contribution from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, has allowed the establishment of a fellowship to support excellent graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics*. Dr. McAlpine, a native of southern Ontario, joined the University of Manitoba in 1972 after the completion of a Ph.D. in Human Genetics at University College, London, and postdoctoral training at Queen’s University. She was appointed Head of the Department of Human Genetics in 1993, a position she held until her untimely death from breast cancer in 1998. A pioneer in human gene mapping, Dr. McAlpine was held in very great esteem by colleagues worldwide, especially in her position as Chair of the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) Nomenclature Committee from 1992-1996. The encouragement and support of graduate students and trainees were among Dr. McAlpine’s favourite causes and the Department was honoured to find that she had made a bequest that allowed this fellowship to be developed.
    Each year, the available annual interest will support one or more awards which will be offered to graduate students who:
  • are enrolled full-time in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at The University of Manitoba;
  • show an excellent potential for a research career;
  • have achieved high academic standing (normally a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or equivalent);
  • have proposed to conduct or are already conducting research relevant to Medical Genetics.

  • This fellowship is renewable over the course of one degree (i.e., cannot be carried over upon completion of the Masters degree to the Ph.D. program). Applicants for renewal will be considered in competition with all new applicants in a given year. In a year when no suitable candidates are found, the award will not be offered and the available annual income will be reinvested with the capital of the fund. Selection decisions made by the committee shall be final.

    Name UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP (UMGF)
    Research Fields TEST All fields eligible except pre-Master's, Occasional students, MBA, MFin, MSCM
    Categories No categories available
    Citizenship Unrestricted
    Eligibility The University of Manitoba and the Faculty of Graduate Studies offer the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGFs). The fellowships are awarded annually to graduate students who have demonstrated intellectual ability and academic accomplishments. The fellowships, valued at $18,000 at the Ph.D. level and at $14,000 at the Master’s level, are offered each year to graduate students who:

    (1) are enrolled in or plan to enroll in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba in a research-based Master’s or Ph.D. program as full-time students (not including pre-Master’s or Occasional students; Master’s of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Finance (MFin), and Master of Supply Chain Management (MSCM), students are not eligible for the UMGF as these programs do not have a research/thesis component;

    (2) minimum admission grade point average of 3.00 based on their admission to their current graduate program. Some departments require a higher GPA to be eligible;

    (3) show great promise as researchers and as graduate students;

    (4) are admitted to, or registered in, a program that is eligible for tri-council graduate student awards.

    The UMGFs may be held in part or full, for the first two years of the Master’s program (from the date of admission) and for the first four years of a Ph.D. program (from the date of admission).

    TOTAL UMGF SUPPORT FOR ANY ONE STUDENT IS (4) FOUR YEARS.

    To determine length of time spent in a graduate program, two years of part-time study in a graduate program will be deemed equivalent to one year of full-time study at both the Master’s and the Ph.D. level. In the case of a transfer from Master’s to Ph.D. without completion of the Master’s degree, transfer denotes that the course work completed in the Master’s program would normally become part of the Ph.D. program. Therefore, the number of years spent in the Master’s program would be calculated as years spent in the Ph.D. program.

    During tenure of the award, recipients must maintain a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0 and cannot receive a grade lower than a C+ (including AX courses).

    The UMGF is not tenable with any other scholarship that is of equal or greater monetary value than the awarded yearly UMGF.

    The above define minimum conditions of eligibility. Individual faculties are responsible for selecting recipients from amongst the students admitted to, or enrolled in, a program offered by a department or unit within that Faculty.

    Value $14,000 for Masters; $18,000 for Ph.D.
    Currency Canadian
    Tenable at 2024-2025 academic year. UM Graduate students must be admitted & registered Full-Time in both September 2024 (202490 term) & January 2025 (202510 term) to be eligible for the 2024-2025 aid year.
    Deadlines No deadlines available
    Application Details Contact your home department regarding deadline and application details for the 2024-2025 UMGF.

    All UMGF applications are submitted to students home unit departments (not FGS).

    Note: Students in the Master of Business Administration program (MBA), the Master of Finance program (MFin), and Master of Supply Chain Management (MCSM), are not eligible for the UMGF.

    Recipients can work unlimited hours, full or part-time, and maintain their UMGF, as long as a student remains a full-time graduate student, meets graduate program requirements, and meets conditions outlined in the current UMGF Award Holder’s Guide: https://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/sites/graduate-studies/files/2024-02/2024-25_UMGF-Award-Holders-Guide.pdf

    Revised: Senate, February 1st, 2017.
